Spartengewerkschaften - Entstehungsmotive Und Ökonomische Wirkung**

The founding of new occupational unions has triggered a new inter-union competition in Germany. So far this trend is limited to the transport and health sectors which have been privatized but are still highly regulated by law. Using a simple theoretical model, we can show that the fragmentation of the unions was also the result of wage policy changes in the past connected with privatization. As the monopolistic rents which public enterprises had been able to obtain came under pressure, the es...

Industrie- Und Spartengewerkschaften Im Konflikt. Organisatorische Voraussetzungen Und Realisierte Gelegenheitsstrukturen**

Individual professional associations have fought for independent labour agreements in recent years. The success of these groups has provoked competitive bidding with the established DGB unions. Analysis of the examples of the Vereinigung Cockpit, Marburger Bund and GDL shows that the rise of these professional unions depends on specific conditions. The three cases present historical, and organisational, features which could be activated through specific opportunity structures. This implies th...

Multi-Unionism and the Representation of Sectional Interests in British Workplaces**

Britain has been regarded as traditionally having had a 'problem' in its industrial relations by virtue of the presence of sectionalism and multi-unionism. This article suggests that this analysis of sectionalism and multi-unionism being a 'problem' is very much bound up with employer perspectives and the specific context of the 1960s and 1970s. By contrast, in a period of retreat for labour unionism since 1979, sectionalism can be viewed in a different and more positive manner, whereby its r...

Verdrängte Beruflichkeit - Renaissance Des Berufsprinzips? **

The recent successes of professional unions are undeniable. This essay poses the question whether there is a triple phenomenon of "excluded professionalism" within (German) union history, its historiography and corresponding industrial sociology. The article argues there is a need for greater attention to professions and professionalism as principles binding union members to representative organizations, and therefore to learn from the current success of these unions instead of criticizing or...

Works Councils and Employment Growth: A Rejoinder to Uwe Jirjahn's Critique**/Works Councils and Employment Growth: A Reply to Addison and Teixeira**

In a characteristically combative treatment, Jirjahn (2008a) argues that Addison and Teixeira's (2006) finding of a negative relationship between works council presence and employment growth is a chimera produced by the way in which establishment size is measured. We reject his assertion of misspecification for two reasons; the second of which undoubtedly contributed to leading Jirjahn astray. And while Jirjahn's treatment is of interest in its own right, he does a poor job of portraying our ...
