Innovation, Competition and Change in International Business: Emergent Research Trajectories
Multinational enterprises (MNEs) are moving away from a 'centralized hub' to a 'multi-hub' network of research and development (R&D) units. Using evidence from European pharmaceutical MNEs, this study analyses the challenges associated with promoting and integrating knowledge flows in multi-hub R&D organizational structures. While these new structures provide greater potential for cross-fertilization of technologies and access to location-specific competences, firms also need to overc...
The paper analyses survey evidence on foreign firms' research and development (R&D) in Greece, in the light of recently derived perceptions of decentralization of knowledge-related activities in multinational enterprises' MNEs) strategic programs. The paper investigates various aspects of MNEs' knowledge-related competitiveness in an intermediate-level economy. It examines the nature, extent and influences of R&D positioning. It also tests empirically the relationship between subsidia...
The Trade Development Path and Export Spillovers in China: A Missing Link?
A two-step modeling strategy is applied to a panel of 5,861 foreign-invested and 7,697 indigenous Chinese firms for the period 1998-2001 to investigate whether export spillovers may represent a mechanism underpinning Dunning's Trade Development Path hypothesis. Such spillovers are found, and the results emphasize the importance of a wide spectrum of spillover channels involving labor mobility, spatial agglomeration, technological imitation and the diffusion of exporting experience. Multinatio...
The Impact of Foreign Direct Investment On the Productivity of China's Automotive Industry
This study contributes to the existing literature by empirically investigating the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows on the aggregate labor productivity of China's automotive industry. A production function model is developed using a panel data set at sub-sector level. Two statistical models: pooled ordinary least squares model and fixed effects model were used to estimate the influence of foreign direct investment on aggregate labor productivity in the industry. Inward FDI pl...
This paper examines whether the World Trade Organization functions to reinforce American dominance (or hegemony) of the world economy via an analysis of trade disputes involving the US. This allows the paper to assess whether the US does better than other countries in this judicialised forum: and in so doing enhance the competitive prospects of their firms. The results are equivocal. The US does best in the early phases of a dispute, where political power is important. It does less well as th...
Insiders and the Law: The Impact of Regulatory Change On Insider Trading
Despite the importance of insider trading laws in promoting a strong financial market, the impact of regulations in minimizing the detrimental effects of insider trading is unsettled. This paper adds to the literature by examining the impact of the introduction of the Securities Market Amendment Act 2002 in New Zealand on several aspects of the market, namely bid-ask spreads, liquidity, price volatility and the cost of capital. The paper finds strong evidence of predicted reductions in the co...
Innovation, Competition and Regulatory Change: Assessing Interrelationships at the Industry Level
This paper focuses on the overall themes of the issue to examine the interrelationships between innovation, competition and regulatory change in international business. It provides a synthesis by highlighting recent interlinked developments in two contrasting industries dominated by large multinationals -- pharmaceuticals and automotives, with specific reference to cars. This industry based assessment highlights the technical, economic and regulatory forces that have together changed the busi...
