The frequency and duration of sickness absences are influenced by working conditions and employment relations within the enterprise. This paper deals with the causes of age-specific sickness rates. In particular, we analyse whether working conditions influence absenteeism of older employees in a different way from absenteeism among younger workers, or whether the influence of working conditions on absenteeism is the same for all age groups. Based on the WSI survey of works councils, our results show (a) a strong correlation between the absenteeism at the firm level and the firm-specific sick ratio for older employees, and (b) a specific relationship between the sickness rates for older employees and working conditions, even when we control for the firm-specific sickness-rates.

Demographic change will lead to a longer working life and older employees taking up of new employment. Using IAB micro economic data, this article investigates firms' characteristics and their recruitment behavior towards workers aged 50 years and more. Special consideration is given to labor supply issues and in particular applications from older job seekers. Our results show that about 75% of firms do not receive applications from such job seekers. Of the firms that do, about one half recruit older workers. There are remarkable differences between firms attracting applications from older job seekers and firms that are willing to recruit them. We address the factors behind these disparities and possible consequences for labor market policies and human resource strategies.

The Zeitschrift fur Personalforschung (ZfP) - German Journal of Human Resource Research - is an academic journal which is concerned with state-of-the-art research in the area of strategic and operative human resource management (HRM) in organisations. The journal seeks to publish articles on the broad subject of HRM without limiting its profile to one particular definition of HRM, discipline or methodology. It seeks to attract contributions which can be in the form of review essays, conceptual papers with critical reflection, and empirical studies, which are particularly welcomed. Its focus on the academic debate sets the ZfP aside from other personnel journals which serve primarily as discussion forums for practitioners and to provide tool application recommendations.

This paper deals with institutionalized forms of employee participation not covered by the Works Constitution Act (Betriebsverfassungsgesetz). Using data of the IAB establishment panel we describe the coverage and quantitative development of such alternative means of representation. Following these facilities at the individual establishment level we find that they are considerably less stable than works councils. In multivariate analysis we identify those establishment characteristics that trigger the implementation of firm specific forms of participation. Such establishments set a high value on human resources and stable employment.
