Although the population in Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC) is still younger, on average, than in Western Europe, the CEEC also have to cope with challenges caused by the demographic shift towards an ageing, shrinking population. Some countries are ageing even faster than Western Europe. Apart from ageing, the CEEC also have to face problems caused by the economic transition. Based on neo-institutional organisation theory this paper looks at the management implications of these developments and points out strategies for Human Resources Management and Marketing in how to cope with upcoming challenges.

This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of foreign investors' ownership strategies in the land-locked transition economy of Mongolia. Drawing on a sample of 1.033 affiliates of foreign investors with varying levels of foreign ownership, the paper examines the choice between a wholly owned subsidiary (WOS) and a joint venture (JV). The results show that the main determinants of foreign equity ownership found in previous research also influence the ownership structure of foreign affiliates in Mongolia. The extent of FDI concentration, natural resource intensity of target industry and location of the affiliate have the expected impact on the foreign investor's choice between a JV and a WOS. However, no support has been found for the impact of capital size of affiliate on the level of ...

A central argument of new institutionalism is that organizational success depends not only on efficient coordination and control of productive activities, but on conforming to institutionalized expectations. There is a dearth of empirical studies which analyze the effects of the adoption of institutionalized elements. In our study, we examine the effect of ISO 9000 certification on resource inflow of German mechanical engineering firms. Our findings suggest that organizations are actually rewarded for complying with institutionalized expectations and implementing ISO 9000 standards. Our findings also show that the readiness to comply with institutionalized norms led to different economic consequences in East and West Germany.

This paper addresses the question of why business ethics did not become a standard part of research and academic education in German-speaking countries until now. It traces this trend back to experiences of the dictatorship prior to World War II. Until the 1980s, Max Weber's concept of value-free scientific statements dominated the discipline. Since the mid-1980s, several positions and concepts of business ethics have been suggested, all of which failed to garner the acceptance of business ethics. Therefore, an alternative, analytical concept of business ethics is developed which separates between logical, empirical and normative dimensions of ethical problems.

This study examines leadership succession among university presidents. Strategy researchers have emphasized that changing leaders is an important organizational decision which is likely to affect the strategic direction of the organization (e.g. Hambrick/Fukuto mi 1991). Using longitudinal data on German university presidents and rectors, three issues are addressed: (1) Presidential tenure is related to selected organizational features. One characteristic to which particular importance is attributed in the succession literature is organizational size. This study analyzes on an organizational level how the office tenure of current university presidents and rectors relates to university size. (2) On the level of the overall university system, a longitudinal study is conducted in order to ...
