This study examines leadership succession among university presidents. Strategy researchers have emphasized that changing leaders is an important organizational decision which is likely to affect the strategic direction of the organization (e.g. Hambrick/Fukuto mi 1991). Using longitudinal data on German university presidents and rectors, three issues are addressed: (1) Presidential tenure is related to selected organizational features. The last two decades have witnessed an unprecedented transfer of Western management education theories and pedagogies into China and most Chinese MBA programs are now being modeled on their Western counterparts. To gauge the impact of this infusion of Western methods and theories on China's management educational system, this paper has conducted a narrative analysis of Chinese MBA teaching cases published before and after this transfer. The holistic approach to management, prevalent in early Chinese MBA cases and typical of traditional Chinese culture, has largely disappeared and Chinese cases now exhibit many of the same weaknesses and deficiencies that have been documented in Harvard Business School cases.

Narratives are important tools in constructing an organization, and individual and collective narratives about key actors and critical events compete in defining the organization and making sense of the challenges faced in organizational change processes. This article introduces narrative interviewing and narrative analysis as qualitative methods relevant to international business research, with illustrations from a case study of a cross-border merger. Narrative interviews offer access to the plurivocal organizational world. A narrative analysis focuses on interviewees' story-work and how it constitutes organizational reality.
