The police in Germany is mainly a matter of the federal states, called "Lander", and only the Federal Police (Bundespolizei) and Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt) have nationwide, though limited powers and are the responsibility of the German Federal Ministry of the Interior. North Rhine-Westphalia was chosen as it is the state with the largest number of habitants and of police officers. In the article three main topics are described and analyzed. The first part focuses on the police system and its reform in recent years. The second part shows some more aspects of the modernization of the police since the 1980s, like the integration of women and ethnic minorities in the police, the different activities to enhance the status of police officers for example by be...

The objective of the article is to highlight the role of environmental values in corporate pro-environmental behaviour. Among the five components of corporate environmental awareness, environmental values are of special importance, as is illustrated by the organisational culture of a Hungarian company showing consistent pro-environmental behaviour regarding all awareness components except values. Empirical research findings - arrived at with the help of Q-methodology - indicate the need for a stable and unambiguous integration of environmental values into organisational culture in order to achieve consistent pro-environmental behaviour at companies.

Germany's health insurance system represents the archetype of the healthcare arrangement generally known as the "Bismarck model". Core elements of this model are the management of healthcare by self-governing corporatist bodies and the funding primarily by income-related contributions, not by taxes. The German health care system has been in a dynamic transformation process since the early 1990s. We currently have a situation where elements of different systems exist side by side. In this contribution we argue that this transformation has already robbed the core elements of the Bismarck system of a great deal of their importance, and that it must be expected that their significance will continue to decline as the reform process progresses.

The article describes how the concepts - i.e. people's knowledge and attitude - connected to the Russian and Czech words for profit have changed during the transformation after 1989. In the socialist period capitalist profit maximization is stereotypically damned whereas the socialist profit remains rather an internal matter of the enterprises. In the 1990es both the profits of particular enterprises and the general notion of profit become a public matter. In specialized and newspaper texts profit is endorsed as a motivation for people to work and the driving economic force. In Czech spoken discourse people are often skeptical towards the notion of profit.
