This paper reviews recent books supporting the development of using qualitative methods in interpretative research. Revolving around three major issues, i.e. increasing the level of rigour, using software packages and new methodological developments, the paper outlines the specific contributions of these books and lays out further needs for development. Measuring culture is a central issue in international management research and is traditionally accomplished using indices of cultural values. Herein the researchers present a new linguistic-based measure of cultural distance (based on linguistic genealogical classification) that is both more fundamental and more widely applicable than values surveys. Structural equation modeling techniques are used to show links to the cultural values dimensions delineated by Hofstede (1980) to show the key results of this study. The researchers also demonstrate relationships between linguistic distance and other measures of managerial values using three additional data sets. The analyses provides strong support for the association between language spoken and managerial values. Differences in managerial...

The affective state of car drivers has a great impact on their driving behavior. In case of a high stress level, car drivers take more risk in turn over, car following and in neglecting traffic warning signs. In the paper we present first a list of factors which have an impact on the psychological state of the car driver with a focus on the affective state of car drivers. Next we give an outline of our multimodal system to assess the affective state of car drivers by analysis of facial expressions and speech signals. The output of our system is the basic input of a stress-o-meter providing the amount of the stress in a graphical way. We assume that this leads to a reduction of physical arousal and mental reappraisal of the situation. We present some experimental results of our assessmen...

In this paper, the researchers explore the use of foreign languages in qualitative interviewing, an issue previously treated as a mere technical consideration and largely neglected in the monolingual, English-dominated environment of international business research. Drawing on literature from linguistic anthropology and qualitative interviewing methodology, they provide a holistic view of foreign language use based on the experiences of 34 scholars from different countries. Their findings show the multiple decisions that researchers make about language use, and their effects on data accuracy and authenticity, rapport-building and the construction of shared understanding.

Outsourcing has gained much prominence in managerial practice and academic discussions in the last two decades or so. Yet, we still do not understand the full implications of outsourcing strategy for corporate performance. The authors longitudinally analyze three cases of major consumer electronics manufacturers, Emerson Radio from the US, Japan's Sony and Philips from the Netherlands to understand the dynamic process related to their sourcing strategies. They develop an evolutionary stage model that relates outsourcing to competence development inside the firm and shows that a vicious cycle may emerge. Results suggest that each of these firms had faced a loss of manufacturing competitiveness in its home country, to which it responded by offshoring and then outsourcing production. When ...

In this article, the authors examine the effects of language on the transfer of knowledge within multinational companies. They unbundle language from the culture box and use the basic communication model to show how language affects all stages. They also examine a range of influences -- cost, transfer medium, teams, networks, trust, staff movements and motivation -- on international knowledge transfer to demonstrate how language effects their operation. They develop the concept of language as a "reconfiguration agent" to explain its extensive, pervasive, on-going and system-altering characteristics.

This study applies the construct of brand equity in a country context, and measures the value-added with which the name of a country endows a product or a brand as perceived by the individual consumer. Specifically, based on Yoo and Donthu's (2001) brand equity scale, a country brand equity scale is developed and empirically tested for its psychometric properties; subsequently a model linking (home) country image and product preferences with country brand equity as an intervening variable is estimated. Results indicate (a) that country brand equity is influenced by country image perceptions, (b) that country brand equity positively impacts on product preferences, and (c) that the latter are not directly influenced by country image perceptions.
