  • This article examines to what extent the German private health insurance (PHI) is undergoing a process of "demarketization". Whereas newly established welfare markets (e.g. in the field of pension, long-term care, health care, labor market etc.) can be regarded as a result of "marketization", the substitutive PHI looks back on a centennial tradition as the market-based counterpart of the statutory health insurance (SHI). Even though the PHI generally assures a high level of insurance protection, the market-based organization of this insurance led to an increase in socio-political regulations in the past two decades. These social liabilities did not transform the PHI business model radically. Nevertheless, an incremental transformation as well as a partial convergence is taking place bet...

  • Temporary Agency Work, Interim Management and Consulting are three versions of the flexible assignment of personnel between enterprises, which are - with regard to their basic economic structure - more or less similar, but which are organised under thoroughly different contractual and legal regulations in Germany and in three more or less differentiated segments of the market. The paper aims at comparing these forms of flexible personnel assignment under empirical and institutional aspects from an economic perspective.

The research is based on surveys among Danish EWC representatives as well as among managers in Danish based MNCs. It is found that the level of employee influence through EWCs...

  • In 2001 the employee's right to reduce working-time according to their own preferences was implemented in Germany. This legal title hardly effects the slowly but steadily growing number of part-time jobs. Nevertheless, data from the socioeconomic panel suggest that about 25% of employees wish to reduce their working-time even if this is associated with a loss of income. The HR-manager is seen as a mediator and is expected to play a major role moderating the effect of the legislative implementation. Therefore the HR managers' concepts and attitudes towards part-time as well as the psychological contract are the subject of the presented study. 42 HR-managers have been interviewed. The data are analysed according to qualitative content analysis. In common use the right to reduce one's work...
