This study investigates how capability exploitation and capability upgrading are associated with IJVs' financial and competitive outcomes in an emerging market, and how environmental dynamism and interpartner cooperation moderate the effect of capability exploitation and upgrading on IJV performance. Results suggest that IJVs in a foreign emerging market tend to perform better in both financial and competitive terms when they possess greater abilities to exploit current resources contributed by foreign and local partners and to continuously upgrade and develop new capabilities. The contribution of capability exploitation and upgrading to IJV performance is stronger when IJVs operate in a more dynamic environment. When interpartner cooperation is superior, capability exploitation plays a...

This article examines to what extent the German private health insurance (PHI) is undergoing a process of "demarketization". Whereas newly established welfare markets (e.g. in the field of pension, long-term care, health care, labor market etc.) can be regarded as a result of "marketization", the substitutive PHI looks back on a centennial tradition as the market-based counterpart of the statutory health insurance (SHI). Even though the PHI generally assures a high level of insurance protection, the market-based organization of this insurance led to an increase in socio-political regulations in the past two decades. These social liabilities did not transform the PHI business model radically. Nevertheless, an incremental transformation as well as a partial convergence is taking place bet...

The paper studied why multinational enterprise (MNE) subsidiaries adopt dissimilar political strategies, and seek to advance the understanding of international political strategy from an MNE parent-subsidiary perspective. Drawing on the MNE parent-subsidiary literature, the paper contended factors at the subsidiary, corporate, and host country levels contribute to subsidiary political strategy dissimilarity. Hypotheses were tested with a sample of US MNE subsidiaries within Western Europe. The results demonstrate that dissimilarity in MNE subsidiary political strategy is attributed to a combination of subsidiary, corporate, and host country factors.

In recent decades Germany and Denmark have constituted survival areas for the classical IR system in an era that has otherwise largely been characterised by the deregulation and disorganisation of industrial relations. From the mid-1990s onwards, however, it has to varying degrees been possible to observe erosive tendencies in these hitherto sturdy fortresses of "organised decentralisation". It is the main thesis of this article that the dualistic German system makes it more difficult for the German parties to adapt the bargaining system so that their overall coordination can be preserved even though the required decentralisation is introduced.

Outsourcing has gained much prominence in managerial practice and academic discussions in the last two decades or so. Yet, we still do not understand the full implications of outsourcing strategy for corporate performance. The authors longitudinally analyze three cases of major consumer electronics manufacturers, Emerson Radio from the US, Japan's Sony and Philips from the Netherlands to understand the dynamic process related to their sourcing strategies. They develop an evolutionary stage model that relates outsourcing to competence development inside the firm and shows that a vicious cycle may emerge. Results suggest that each of these firms had faced a loss of manufacturing competitiveness in its home country, to which it responded by offshoring and then outsourcing production. When ...

The human capital represented by corporate employees involved in the information and knowledge economy is becoming an increasingly central value-creating factor in global competition. However, in contrast to other value-creating factors, human capital is more difficult to measure, evaluate and manage. Due to human capital's great importance for economic value creation, a series of studies on human capital evaluation have been published during the last few years. This paper discusses why so many traditional evaluation methods are only partly appropriate for categorizing, analyzing and evaluating human capital's special characteristics. In particular, it is difficult for many traditional approaches to integrate notions of flexibility and options with regard to the human capital of compani...

The paper discusses the main challenges confronted by Mexican government agencies and universities to deal with the model implemented since the late 1980s in the context of neoliberalism and globalization. Such challenges are associated with the tendencies observed at three levels. First, the transformation of the sense and content of the autonomy regime of the university and its legal principles. Secondly, the emergence of governance as a strategic condition to perform institutional ends and projects in a market driven context. Finally, the gradual conformation of the entrepreneurial university under new organizational arrangements through which it is trying to perform their functions effectively and legitimately to fulfill current market and economic demands. The paper concludes by di...
