  • In this paper we argue that flexpatriates' needs and goals are not homogeneous and cannot be met simply by providing standard measures to facilitate working in different cultural locations. We review the nature of flexpatriate lifestyle to examine how employees of multinational enterprises located in Austria face a range of issues in their work, personal and family lives. We present four empirically grounded types, Tough Travelers, Enjoyers, Cosmopolitans and Contactors. The types show various facets of flexpatriates' lifestyles that are essential to understand their significant implications for HR architecture, commitment strategies and HRM practices in order to meet the employees' needs.

  • Although the population in Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC) is still younger, on average, than in Western Europe, the CEEC also have to cope with challenges caused by the demographic shift towards an ageing, shrinking population. Some countries are ageing even faster than Western Europe. Apart from ageing, the CEEC also have to face problems caused by the economic transition. Based on neo-institutional organisation theory this paper looks at the management implications of these developments and points out strategies for Human Resources Management and Marketing in how to cope with upcoming challenges.

  • This paper is concerned with people management practices in companies in Malaysia. It examines the development of the main practice areas of the management of human resources (HR), the HR management (HRM) function and to what extent locally-owned companies (LOC) are influenced by multinational companies (MNC) operating in Malaysia. We found LOCs do not place a high priority on their HR practices and do not benchmark against the HR practices of MNCs. Overall, Malaysian people management generally would be better characterized as still more like 'personnel', than 'HR', management. Any acceptance and development of the HRM concept by Malaysian companies has been slow and cautious. This situation may prove problematic for future competitiveness and upgrading in the context of low wage cost ...

  • This paper considers the impact of ethnocentric policies, using as an example diversity policies, created by Multinational Companies (MNCs), Non Government Organisations (NGOs) and international agencies then imposed on a host country and its population. Examples of practices in the Asian Pacific region illustrate how the experience of colonialisation, war and migration have major impact on perceptions of the Host Country governments and nationals The paper discusses possible reasons for Host Country Nationals (HCNs) to resist foreign, apparently, ethnocentric policies. The resistance is often based on the experience of being colonised or the fragile social cohesiveness by the host nations. The motives of the MNC are often perceived to be to weaken the host nation and its organisations ...
