  • Drawing on the transaction costs, strategic capability and the strategic cognition perspectives, this study seeks to examine whether and how firms' strategic orientations at the business level influence the entry mode choices that firms make in accessing foreign markets. The study uses a sample of 332 foreign market entries made by 62 US based firms over a period of 6 years to test hypotheses linking firm business level strategy to the choice of foreign entry modes. Findings indicate that Prospectors are more likely to choose equity-based foreign market entry modes than Defenders. In addition, Prospectors favor full-ownership entry modes, namely, greenfield investments and full acquisitions, over shared-ownership modes such as joint ventures and partial acquisitions. In this study, the ...

  • This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of foreign investors' ownership strategies in the land-locked transition economy of Mongolia. Drawing on a sample of 1.033 affiliates of foreign investors with varying levels of foreign ownership, the paper examines the choice between a wholly owned subsidiary (WOS) and a joint venture (JV). The results show that the main determinants of foreign equity ownership found in previous research also influence the ownership structure of foreign affiliates in Mongolia. The extent of FDI concentration, natural resource intensity of target industry and location of the affiliate have the expected impact on the foreign investor's choice between a JV and a WOS. However, no support has been found for the impact of capital size of affiliate on the level of ...

  • This article offers a critical assessment of the role of strategic alliances in gaining sustainable competitive advantage through building knowledge assets. To do so, it develops a conceptual model, in which three key concepts: the role of "knowledge assets" in gaining "sustainable competitive advantage" via "strategic alliances" between firms are defined and related to each other. It argues core competencies and dynamic capabilities of firms depend on knowledge assets of the firm. In turn, knowledge assets of the firm determine its sustainable competitive advantage. Furthermore, it explicates how knowledge assets can be exploited or explored in a strategic alliance context. In addition, by offering a new conceptual model, this article contributes to our understanding of the linkages am...

  • The paper models location of banking FDI under volatile demand conditions. In the model, information arrives either through passage of time or though presence in the foreign market. The model is also extended to analyze strategic and simultaneous FDI. The results show that market entry evolves from deferring FDI to partial FDI and only then to full FDI. The switch to partial FDI occurs faster when banks can gather information only through a presence in the foreign market. The switch to partial FDI does not occur when immediate full FDI enables more efficient production. The results are at odds with models developed for predictable demand conditions in which banks switch straight from deferring FDI to full FDI. The paper generates an integrated view of the location of banking FDI.
