Market-led reform strategies around the world have given rise to fears of a progressive commercialization of hospital care. The aim of this article is to suggest an analytical framework that might explain the ubiquitous market-led reform strategies and to scrutinize widespread claim that commercialization processes impacts negatively on quality and equality of access. In comparing an ideal type model of commercialized health care with institutional and organizational change the article provides an assessment of commercialization processes in German hospital care. Although there is a newly evolving market-led governance structure in German hospital care commercialization processes have, however, been restricted. While there are strong signs that on a regulatory level the German hospital ...

Against the background of globalization and the erosion of the power of the nation state, a debate in political science is currently taking place which focuses on the notion of global governance, and which considers whether a new framework of international regulation is likely to be established. To date, little importance has been attributed to global trade unions and transnational industrial relations in this debate. Conversely, it has hardly affected research on industrial relations and trade unions so far. This paper discusses the efforts of various subdisciplines to identify new international regulatory mechanisms and examines the possibilities for their integration under the umbrella of the governance concept. It is argued that trade unions, like other social actors, assume functio...

Although firms increasingly rely on interfirm collaboration to explore new technological opportunities, few studies have examined the ways in which this collaboration form is governed. In this paper, we attempt to increase our understanding of governing explorative R&D alliances. First, we argue that explorative R&D alliances are likely to face substantial risks of opportunistic behavior and high coordination costs. second, applying insights from the alliance literature, we identify formal governance mechanisms as effective tools to mitigate the risk of opportunistic behavior as well as coordination costs. However, relying on insights from the new product development literature, we argue that such formal governance mechanisms may hamper exploring new technological opportunities....

There is much change happening within outpatient care in Germany. What will be the out-come of these changes? This article analyzes changes in the legal framework and policy impacts concerning the system of organized interests. Subsequently the manifold changes in German regions are analyzed to develop ideal-typical scenarios of the possible future of hierarchy, market, and cooperation in outpatient care governance. It is argued that minor reform compromises are about to lead to major changes of the subsystem.

The article focuses on the way in which multinational corporations (MNCs) and local parent firms interact in the construction and operation of international joint ventures (IJVs). It seeks to contribute to the theory of IJV process in two ways. First, it constructs a preliminary integrative theoretical framework, which draws attention to the roles of initial venture conditions, of political, learning and relationship processes and parental perceptions of efficiency and equity. Second, it infers theoretical lessons from a case study of a German-Czech IJV. The empirical findings highlight the role of critical events that stimulate sensemaking processes, which in turn politicise the IJV and create different dynamic patterns.
