Tight labour markets and changing employment relationships make employees with high levels of firm-specific knowledge, skills, and abilities less dependent on and committed to their employer. Companies need to work harder in order to attract and retain employees and protect their mutual human capital investments. Using a dataset with survey data from employees in 11 companies (N = 777), the present study shows evidence that employee share ownership, provided that it is taken seriously as reflected by the presence of a small number of other HRM practices in the company, might be a worthwhile avenue for managers to explore.

In this article, the author analyses the mission statements of 50 top Slovene enterprises which are published on the companies ' web sites. The purpose of this research is 1) to establish the degree to which the Slovene enterprises make use of their web sites to convey their mission to various stakeholders, 2) to identify the stakeholder groups that are mentioned in mission statements, and 3) to analyse the contents of these statements. With the rise of the global service economy, an understanding of the export competitiveness of nations is critical for managers seeking offshore export locations, and for government policy makers who wish to bolster the attractiveness of their nation as an exporting location. Services globalization calls into question the role of human capital investment, whose effect in past studies has been mixed. Drawing on human capital theory, this article developed three propositions and analyzed the effect of human capital investment, infrastructure, and the business environment on the export of services and goods from 25 countries from 1989 to 2003. Human capital did have a significant effect on the exports of goods and services. However, contrary to the expectations of human capital theory, hum...

This study examines the influence of industry and home country characteristics on domestic firm innovation investment and considers whether these relationships are more pronounced if the firm is competing in global versus multidomestic industries. Hypotheses are developed and tested using data from 625 firms in eight industries, across 31 countries. The findings generally support the hypotheses that industry structure and national context have significant direct influence on firm innovation investment. Furthermore, industry structure was found to have a more pronounced influence on firm innovation investment for global industries than for multidomestic industries.

Although the number of flexible workers is constantly growing, little is known about career paths built up on flexible employment. In this article, we investigate the chances of former flexible workers to be employed in a permanent full-time position. In two field experiments, we asked for employers' evaluation of applicants with a flexible employment history. Results indicate that former part-time work is in fact perceived as a disadvantage for candidates when applying for a permanent full-time position while other types of flexible work (e.g., fixed term contracts, part-time work, and interorganizational mobility) are not. Implications of these results for individual careers and employers' understanding of personnel are discussed.
