  • Subsidiary managers are faced with complex managerial roles involving both the interests of the multinational corporation (MNC) and the subsidiary. This paper suggests complex roles are best fulfilled when managers develop dual organizational identification towards both entities. Based on a conceptualization of dual organizational identification in terms of relative magnitude, the effect of dual identification on subsidiary manager roles and role conflict is tested. Results indicate that high identification with both entities is associated with high role fulfillment and that similarity in organizational identities directly affects role conflict.

  • With scientific research growing increasingly multidisciplinary in nature, team playing and communication skills have become critical in the achievement of scientific breakthroughs. This study adds valuable evidence to the oft-cited "productivity puzzle" in the sciences by comparing the work styles, attitudes, and productivity of female and male scientists. The application of t-test analysis to data on scientists from the United Kingdom and the Netherlands indicates that women report relatively higher abilities in communication skills and teamwork than men. Also, both female and male scientists report difficulties in balancing work and family responsibilities, but proportionately more women than men rely on outside sources of childcare. • This paper employs multiple theoretical perspectives -- resource- and knowledge-based views as well as social network theory -- to explore the dynamics of guanxi in the context of Chinese entrepreneurial firms. The researchers propose a dynamic model and offer multiple propositions for researchers to examine the role of guanxi for knowledge management and decision-making at various developmental stages of such firms. By integrating the individual level phenomenon of guanxi with firm-level issues, the researchers provide new perspectives for future research as well as guidelines for managerial practices.

  • The paper analyses the mix of training forms in employer-provided training in East and West German enterprises with a special emphasis on informal and work-integrated forms of learning. Recent studies have shown that East German enterprises are at least as active in employer-provided training as West German firms. However, these studies are limited to formal ways of further training. Based on a large-scale enterprise survey and ordered-logit regressions, differences in employer-provided further training activities between East and West German enterprises can be shown. In particular, East German enterprises are less active in informal and work-integrated ways of further training.

  • German unification merged two contrasting family models: the East German dual-worker model and the West German male breadwinner model. Since 2002, Germany has been essentially changing directions towards a third model called "sustainable family policy." The new policy model conceives of children as society's future assets, seeks to encourage childbearing by supporting parents to be workers and attempts to reduce families' poverty by boosting mothers' employment. By increasing childcare facilities also of very small children and by developing early childhood education politicians claim to invest in children, make up for social inequalities and generate "sustainable. human capital. The ongoing family policy change seems at odds with mainstream judgments on reform incapability of the Germa...

  • While the role of management accountants has traditionally been limited to the provision of useful information to decision-makers, recent studies show that contemporary management accountants have become an integral part of strategic decision-making processes. The findings based on a survey of 193 large Slovenian companies reveal that Slovenian accountants are relatively strongly involved in strategic management processes, although the level of participation varies intensely across industries. Participation is relatively high in contemporary manufacturing industries, the trade sector, and tourism and hospitality services, whereas it is relatively low in public services and utilities, construction, and logistics sectors.
