  • This paper revisits the mainstream academic perspective on the relationship between multinationality and performance (MP). The authors argue that most, if not all, past empirical work on this international management topic is flawed from a conceptual perspective since there is no valid theoretical rationale that would predict a generalizable MP relationship. They suggest that useful empirical work on the MP linkage requires prior analysis of the key parameters underlying the substance of the multinationality concept in specific empirical settings. They revisit the MP relationship, and elaborate on three key parameters underlying the substance of the multinationality concept: Variety of strategic motivations for FDI, environmental complexity resulting from bundles of discrete FDI decisio...

  • This article deals with a specific approach to international labour regulation: social clauses in the free trade agreements of the US. It analyses the history, institutional design, the practice and the regulatory impact of the pilot agreement, the North American Agreement on Labour Cooperation (NAALC), between the US, Canada and Mexico, one of the two NAFTA side agreements. With the NAALC the three governments subscribed to the obligation to promote, enforce and improve social standards within the framework of their national labour legislation. In order to foster compliance with the agreement, international and national institutions were created as well as procedures for cooperation and complaints. Procedures of conflict regulation include sanction mechanisms. Based on the findings of ...

  • Recent expansion of Chinese outward direct investment is analysed at two levels: at the aggregate level using Chinese Ministry of Commerce data and at the level of the individual FDI project using data compiled by the State Administration of Foreign Exchange. * Project level analysis reveals wholly-owned projects are increasingly displacing joint ventures as the predominant mode of entry. * Changes to the investment motivations are discernable in market-seeking FDI: with defensive and offensive FDI increasingly supplanting trade-related investment activity, and in strategic asset-seeking FDI: with improved access to foreign-owned technologies, brands, and distribution channels gaining importance.

  • The researchers explore the role of foreign direct investment and (its relationship to) clusters for the competitiveness (and catching-up) of small(er) developing countries. They suggest that while size per se need not matter, small(er) developing countries need to explicitly account for any liabilities of smallness when devising and implementing strategies for competitiveness and catching-up. They claim that international strategic management scholarship can add insights on this important issue, by complementing extant literature and contributions by international trade and economic development scholarship.

  • This paper demonstrates the continued relevance of Penrose's Theory of the Growth of the Firm (1959) (TGF) to explain MNE expansion patterns. Explaining MNE growth requires explicit attention to three elements not addressed fully by Penrose: 1) technology-based firm-specific advantages, 2) dynamic capabilities, and 3) melding location-bound and internationally transferable knowledge, especially through astute human resources management. TGF includes foundational insights on the dynamic capabilities approach in strategy and contributes to assessing normative models in international strategy. Penrose did not appreciate fully the unique knowledge recombination challenges prevailing in international business, especially in the context of the large MNE. This uniqueness of knowledge recombina...
