This study examines how far restructuring has involved a change in leadership style and the development of new philosophies and approaches which derive from the Anglo-American model of 'people management'. During the Communist period, Romania experienced a highly centralised system of management. Broader currents of historical and political culture also served to inculcate values of bureaucratic formalism. In transitional times it appears that the management role is being re-defined and management culture is changing. This article seeks to understand these changes in the culture and identity of Romanian management by examining experience in a range of organisations. It also considers how far Anglo-American values of HRM and managing are relevant to a country where the wider cultural and...

The philosophical thoughts on economics in Germany have been restricted to business ethics so far. The consequence has been that there have been developed certain positions, whose claims are well defined and were defended against each other; but for several years there has not been any remarkable progress, since everybody hoped to convince all the other combatants, but nobody has surrendered so far. That is why it is proposed here to broaden the perspective beyond the limits of ethics into epistemological questions in the relation of philosophy and economics. The methods considered are: critical questioning the fundamental concepts and assumptions of economic thought, the reflections of the discourse of economics, including the history of concepts and metaphors, genealogy of morals; the...

Subsidiary managers are faced with complex managerial roles involving both the interests of the multinational corporation (MNC) and the subsidiary. This paper suggests complex roles are best fulfilled when managers develop dual organizational identification towards both entities. Based on a conceptualization of dual organizational identification in terms of relative magnitude, the effect of dual identification on subsidiary manager roles and role conflict is tested. Results indicate that high identification with both entities is associated with high role fulfillment and that similarity in organizational identities directly affects role conflict.

The aim of this study is to investigate: 1. the well-being (job stress and job dissatisfaction) of academic staff at the University of Antwerp, 2. the specific factors of the work environment who have an impact on employee well-being, and 3. the interaction between HR practices and employee well-being. Suggestions of improvement of the work environment are to be formulated. In order to meet this purpose, a conceptual model was designed, based on the stress model developed in the Institute for Social Research (ISR) (University of Michigan), and on the HR-model of Peccei (2004). The elements most likely to cause job stress, according to the participants, were workload and time pressures, uncertainty, lack of feedback and social support. Further, it appeared that the HR-related job charact...

This paper employs multiple theoretical perspectives -- resource- and knowledge-based views as well as social network theory -- to explore the dynamics of guanxi in the context of Chinese entrepreneurial firms. The researchers propose a dynamic model and offer multiple propositions for researchers to examine the role of guanxi for knowledge management and decision-making at various developmental stages of such firms. By integrating the individual level phenomenon of guanxi with firm-level issues, the researchers provide new perspectives for future research as well as guidelines for managerial practices.

The last two decades have witnessed an unprecedented transfer of Western management education theories and pedagogies into China and most Chinese MBA programs are now being modeled on their Western counterparts. To gauge the impact of this infusion of Western methods and theories on China's management educational system, this paper has conducted a narrative analysis of Chinese MBA teaching cases published before and after this transfer. The holistic approach to management, prevalent in early Chinese MBA cases and typical of traditional Chinese culture, has largely disappeared and Chinese cases now exhibit many of the same weaknesses and deficiencies that have been documented in Harvard Business School cases.

In contemporary discourse it is almost commonplace to describe societies and work relations as highly individualized. In this article we develop a conceptual framework that enables us to discuss processes and practices of individualization as political technologies. Following a line of thinking influenced by Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze, we first illustrate three different regimes of work. The main focus is on elaborating and illustrating characteristics of the post-disciplinary regime of work which allows us to systematize fundamental shifts in the way of organizing and managing work. We then analyze contemporary strategies for producing the "appropriate individual" as "technologies of modulation" that focus on the production of the autonomous, flexible and adaptable subject. We ...

Based on empirical studies in Romania, Estonia, Germany, and Austria within the GLOBE project, the authors try to answer the question of cultural embeddedness of leadership patterns in an environment of more and more globalised management. Special emphasis is put on the match/mismatch of the observed styles of leadership behaviour of CEO's with regional and global expectations, on the differences and similarities between the examined countries, the influence of transformational settings in the CEE countries, and the prospective changes due to a new generation of managers.
