  • This paper employs multiple theoretical perspectives -- resource- and knowledge-based views as well as social network theory -- to explore the dynamics of guanxi in the context of Chinese entrepreneurial firms. The researchers propose a dynamic model and offer multiple propositions for researchers to examine the role of guanxi for knowledge management and decision-making at various developmental stages of such firms. By integrating the individual level phenomenon of guanxi with firm-level issues, the researchers provide new perspectives for future research as well as guidelines for managerial practices.

  • The last two decades have witnessed an unprecedented transfer of Western management education theories and pedagogies into China and most Chinese MBA programs are now being modeled on their Western counterparts. To gauge the impact of this infusion of Western methods and theories on China's management educational system, this paper has conducted a narrative analysis of Chinese MBA teaching cases published before and after this transfer. The holistic approach to management, prevalent in early Chinese MBA cases and typical of traditional Chinese culture, has largely disappeared and Chinese cases now exhibit many of the same weaknesses and deficiencies that have been documented in Harvard Business School cases.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate: 1. the well-being (job stress and job dissatisfaction) of academic staff at the University of Antwerp, 2. the specific factors of the work environment who have an impact on employee well-being, and 3. the interaction between HR practices and employee well-being. Suggestions of improvement of the work environment are to be formulated. In order to meet this purpose, a conceptual model was designed, based on the stress model developed in the Institute for Social Research (ISR) (University of Michigan), and on the HR-model of Peccei (2004). The elements most likely to cause job stress, according to the participants, were workload and time pressures, uncertainty, lack of feedback and social support. Further, it appeared that the HR-related job charact...

  • In contemporary discourse it is almost commonplace to describe societies and work relations as highly individualized. In this article we develop a conceptual framework that enables us to discuss processes and practices of individualization as political technologies. Following a line of thinking influenced by Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze, we first illustrate three different regimes of work. The main focus is on elaborating and illustrating characteristics of the post-disciplinary regime of work which allows us to systematize fundamental shifts in the way of organizing and managing work. We then analyze contemporary strategies for producing the "appropriate individual" as "technologies of modulation" that focus on the production of the autonomous, flexible and adaptable subject. We ...

  • This paper explores the dynamics in strategic alliances between small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and large organisations (corporates). Despite the volumes written on this subject, few studies take into account this context of interorganisational relationships. The dynamics in strategic partnerships between small and large organisations are potentially multifaceted and fraught with complexities and contradictions. The partner organisations bring diverse interests and resources to the strategic partnerships and these affect the dynamics of their relationships. Using the literature on strategic alliances, this article examines four such strategic partnerships in New Zealand. Results show that in order to increase the likelihood of successful collaboration, the alliance partners mu...

  • The growing number of international-management studies has stimulated the search for a better understanding of this expression and field. Recent articles have agreed and disagreed on what it means. A key point of discussion has been whether the traditional definition of international management - namely, management crossing borders - should be challenged; another is whether related expressions, such as global management, does improve the understanding of what "international management" means. The researchers develop a definition that ranges beyond the one-way crossing of borders to include two-way exchanges, domestic learning and the development of a practice of management in all institutions. Key results show that "International management" applies not only to the unidirectional crossi...
