This article deals with a model of worker participation which was introduced in a German car dealership and repair shop in the 1960s and which goes far beyond the legal framework of German codetermination ("Mitbestimmung"). The model comprises full codetermination in economic affairs, substantial gain-sharing, participation through work teams on the shop floor, and the "neutralization of capital" (i.e., transfer of owner's property rights to a foundation). The significance of these four elements is described in theoretical terms. The development was evaluated by interviewing a representative sample of the company's employees. The economic and social success of the company leads to the question of how industrial democracy can be further advanced in the future.

Technological optimistic voices assume that, from a technical perspective, the IT possibilities for HRM are endless: in principal all HR processes can be supported by IT. E-HRM is the relatively new term for this IT supported HRM, especially through the use of web technology. This paper aims at demystifying e-HRM by answering the following questions: what actually is e-HRM?, what are the goals of starting with e-HRM?, what types can be distinguished? and what are the outcomes of e-HRM? Based upon the literature, an e-HRM research model is developed and, guided by this model, five organizations have been studied that have already been on the "e-HR road" for a number of years. We conclude that the goals of e-HRM are mainly to improve HR's administrative efficiency/to achieve cost reductio...

In 1983, Kiggundu/Jorgensen/Hafsi published in ASQ a synthesis on issues related to the applicability of management theories to developing countries. They found that theory was applicable only where the organization could behave as a closed system. The authors argue that isomorphic trends and new theoretical developments support the hypothesis that their findings should not hold anymore. This article reviews 170 articles published in the 1983-2002 period to replicate their study and tests the hypothesis.

The ratios of spending on R&D, advertising and marketing to sales are employed accordingly as direct determinants of the degree of vertical and horizontal product differentiation. The model is verified with direct regressions and a system of simultaneous regressions combining large firm survey with sector-level data from the UNCTAD for 13 Central and Eastern European countries. The econometric results evince that the increased demand for skilled labour (human capital) was greater than any FDI-induced labour market spillovers. As expected, this contributed to less differentiation which became more costly. Consistently, foreign-owned enterprises employed more highly-skilled employees but they reacted to more foreign investment similarly to domestic firms (so reducing the level of diff...

Forecasting changes in business environments is critical for appropriate responses by policy makers and corporate decision makers. This article reports on a Delphi study which features three rounds of interchanges between experts on possible changes in the international business environment and practice in the next years. Results indicate that terrorism and corruption issues have risen in importance while trade negotiations have declined. Corporate strategies are seen to need significant reform to deliver on the promise of globalization. As trends are becoming more multidimensional, regular solicitation of stakeholder perspectives becomes more important.
