The financial crisis is a crisis of governance as well. In search of answers and solutions many scholars and practitioners recommend improved output control, i.e. better external incentives or even stricter regulations. Monasteries demonstrate that alternative models may be more suitable to enhance sustainable governance quality and to reduce agency problems. In the long history of monasteries, some abbots and monks were known to line their own pockets and some monasteries were undisciplined. Monasteries developed special systems to combat these excesses thus ensuring their survival over centuries. We study these features from an economic perspective. Derived from an analysis of the Benedictine monastery of Engelberg we offer three improvements of applied governance designed to reduce a...

Specific concerns have been raised about the ontologies and epistemologies that have dominated HRM research and the concomitant ubiquity of positivistic research methodologies. These concerns have also given rise to calls for more pioneering research framed within alternative paradigms. This paper considers the theoretical and practical value of alternative approaches to the study of HRM. Results show, drawing on interpretive studies of HRM rooted in different epistemologies, ontologies, and methodologies that a composite body of HRM scholarship is needed, where dominant and emerging approaches to the study of HRM are mutually supportive.

The differential evolution (DE) algorithm is a powerful population-based stochastic technique to search for global optimum in the continuous search space. Success of DE algorithm strongly depends on choosing its parameters. The competition in differential evolution was shown to be an efficient instrument to avoid time-consuming process of tuning control parameters. A new variant of competitive DE algorithm, called BEBERAN, was proposed and tested on benchmark functions at four levels of the search space dimension. The BEBERAN was compared with the most promising competitive variant, DEBR18. BEBERAN, in contrast to DEBR18, includes in addition the exponential crossover.

The theory of efficient capital markets postulates that stock prices always correctly reflect all available information. Consequently, as far as immaterial firm specifics include value implications, those also need to be considered in the determination of a firm's fundamental value or financial perspectives. Bassen and Kovács document that despite the increasing importance and attention attached to a firm's intangibles, present-time research fails to provide a unanimous, applicable measurement methodology that would allow translating all intangible assets into quantified value determinants. This paper concentrates on measurement instruments capturing three main facets of intangible value determinants--the environmental, social and government (ESG) issues.

As part of the GLOBE project, this paper explores the societal and the organizational culture of the Romanian finance industry as reflected by middle managers' opinion. The two culture levels are compared across nine cultural dimensions. The differences between the cultural manifestations (practices and values) are analyzed through comparing the middle managers' answers to "what is" and "what should be" type questions at organizational and societal levels. The findings show some significant differences for the majority of the cultural dimensions examined both between culture levels (organizational versus societal) and culture manifestations (practices versus values).
