A group of fuzzy IF-THEN rules is belonging to one of the most popular, most effective, and user- friendliest knowledge representations. For this reason, extraction of these rules is becoming a more-and-more important part of the Data Mining stage in the Knowledge Discovery in Databases Process. In this paper, a direct algorithm for extracting fuzzy IF-THEN rules on the basis of linguistic variable elimination is described. The algorithm is implemented within a designed object-oriented software library Fuzzy Rule Miner. Besides the introduced algorithm, it implements two algorithms for fuzzy rule extraction based on using fuzzy decision trees of ID3 kind. An essential precondition for comparing the implemented algorithms and for verifying the legitimacy of the introduced algorithm is pe...

This paper reviews recent books supporting the development of using qualitative methods in interpretative research. Revolving around three major issues, i.e. increasing the level of rigour, using software packages and new methodological developments, the paper outlines the specific contributions of these books and lays out further needs for development. This study examines the relationship between social capital that arises from individual relations and individual innovativeness. Social capital is considered a multidimensional construct and individual innovativeness is measured through six different indicators of scientific production. Individual social capital is compared with the innovative performance of each individual in a whole department. Our work shows that the capacity to access and to mobilize resources through these relations is a key factor in increasing individual innovativeness in a context in which it may be measured. This questions the importance of an individual's position in a network as well as the structure of the network with respect to innovativeness.

This paper presents the results of a study (involving 220 larger Slovenian companies) which aimed to examine the influence of information and communication technologies (ICT) and organisational learning (OL) on both financial (FP) and non-financial performance (NFP). In this manner a structural equation model was conceptualised based on prior theoretical and empirical foundations. According to responses from Slovenian CEOs, the statistically significant and positive influence of ICT on FP and NFP were established. No support for the 'ICT productivity paradox' can be provided by our research. Future longitudinal research needs to establish whether the ICT productivity paradox is the reverse image of organisational learning.

This article deals with a neural network based on Min/Max nodes and its utilisation for image recognition purposes. The general concepts of the Min/Max nodes and the single-layer neural networks are outlined. The developed software systems for simulation are briefly introduced and the results of simulations with the various settings of a neural net are presented. The subject of simulations was the recognition of human faces. Finally, the hardware design of the neural network in VHDL is shown. The design demonstrates the ease of systems realisation and the achieving of high performance.
