This paper presents the results of a study (involving 220 larger Slovenian companies) which aimed to examine the influence of information and communication technologies (ICT) and organisational learning (OL) on both financial (FP) and non-financial performance (NFP). In this manner a structural equation model was conceptualised based on prior theoretical and empirical foundations. According to responses from Slovenian CEOs, the statistically significant and positive influence of ICT on FP and NFP were established. No support for the 'ICT productivity paradox' can be provided by our research. Future longitudinal research needs to establish whether the ICT productivity paradox is the reverse image of organisational learning.

The field of nanotechnology has attracted widespread attention and funding in recent years. Moreover, the unique properties of nanotechnological applications suggest potential to solve some of the worlds most pressing challenges, but they come with uncertainties and risks as all new technologies. The purpose of this paper is to outline the field of ethical and societal questions surrounding this new technology and to describe the Nanologue-project: A practically orientated approach which brings together researchers, businesses and civil society representatives from across Europe to facilitate a dialogue on these ethical and societal questions.

This article analyzes the competitive advantage of German renewable energy firms in Russia. Based on Porter's diamond model of competitiveness, we examine the demand for renewable energy in Russia and German firms' ability to meet this demand. While the overall demand for renewable energy in Russia is still low, the study reveals formidable opportunities in the fields of biomass, solar and wind energy. Our findings are meant to address managers in the renewable energy industry and to aid policy makers in environmental support and action.

In contemporary discourse it is almost commonplace to describe societies and work relations as highly individualized. In this article we develop a conceptual framework that enables us to discuss processes and practices of individualization as political technologies. Following a line of thinking influenced by Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze, we first illustrate three different regimes of work. The main focus is on elaborating and illustrating characteristics of the post-disciplinary regime of work which allows us to systematize fundamental shifts in the way of organizing and managing work. We then analyze contemporary strategies for producing the "appropriate individual" as "technologies of modulation" that focus on the production of the autonomous, flexible and adaptable subject. We ...

In modern society, many people keep working hours different from the standard (9 hours, 5 days a week during conventional time of the day), a regimen leading to sleep deprivation and/or circadian desynchronization, and, consequently, to sleepiness, fatigue, impaired efficiency and ultimately to psychic and somatic complaints. Fortunately, sleepiness-related health and occupational hazards can be kept under control using scientifically tested precautions designed to help maintain wakefulness. Suitable work and rest scheduling and observance of the principles of sleep hygiene are of major importance there. In situations which interfere with sleep, it is possible to use hypnotics or behavioral techniques and melatonin for circadian regimen optimization. In situations when sleep loss is tem...

As part of the GLOBE project, this paper explores the societal and the organizational culture of the Romanian finance industry as reflected by middle managers' opinion. The two culture levels are compared across nine cultural dimensions. The differences between the cultural manifestations (practices and values) are analyzed through comparing the middle managers' answers to "what is" and "what should be" type questions at organizational and societal levels. The findings show some significant differences for the majority of the cultural dimensions examined both between culture levels (organizational versus societal) and culture manifestations (practices versus values).

Recent expansion of Chinese outward direct investment is analysed at two levels: at the aggregate level using Chinese Ministry of Commerce data and at the level of the individual FDI project using data compiled by the State Administration of Foreign Exchange. * Project level analysis reveals wholly-owned projects are increasingly displacing joint ventures as the predominant mode of entry. * Changes to the investment motivations are discernable in market-seeking FDI: with defensive and offensive FDI increasingly supplanting trade-related investment activity, and in strategic asset-seeking FDI: with improved access to foreign-owned technologies, brands, and distribution channels gaining importance.

Organizations seek new ways to stimulate collective competences. One possible way this can be done is though self-managing teams. This paper aims to understand the collective competences based on their constitutive elements: interaction, sensemaking and identity. For this study we investigated a Brazilian world-class petrochemical company, recognized by their excellence in working with self-managed teams. Two semi-autonomous teams were studied, distinct in its pattern and performance. The main results point out that the understanding of collective competences is more related to the dynamics and the interaction process itself rather than to the content of this approach and its constitutive elements separately.
