The police in Germany is mainly a matter of the federal states, called "Lander", and only the Federal Police (Bundespolizei) and Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt) have nationwide, though limited powers and are the responsibility of the German Federal Ministry of the Interior. North Rhine-Westphalia was chosen as it is the state with the largest number of habitants and of police officers. In the article three main topics are described and analyzed. The first part focuses on the police system and its reform in recent years. The second part shows some more aspects of the modernization of the police since the 1980s, like the integration of women and ethnic minorities in the police, the different activities to enhance the status of police officers for example by be...

According to the theory, a combination of the highly regulated external labour market and the internal rigidity would induce organisational inefficiency. Evidence suggests that theoretically unexpected results of that combination prevailed in Slovenia. Under the pressure of the competition on the international markets, Slovene companies, being trapped in the combination of the two rigidities, were determined to compete on the basis of work intensification. The surviving coalition, based on the exchange between the managers (demanding work intensification) on the one hand, and trade unions (defending employees' wage and job stability) on the other, was formed. Within the logic of the exchange, trade unions actively participated in the fight for companies' survival. As a specific entrepre...

This study examines effects of structurally anchored organizational democracy on perceived sociomoral atmosphere and on employees' prosocial, democratic behavioral orientations. Data result from the ODEM research project. Beside a description of the concept of sociomoral atmosphere, within this project, 30 small and medium sized enterprises from Austria, North Italy, South Germany, and Liechtenstein (542 participants) were surveyed with questionnaires, interviews, and document analyses. Based on organizational science criteria, several types of enterprises were derived and pooled into three groups of structurally anchored organizational democracy (no, medium, and high democracy). Multivariate group analyses show significant differences between those groups in parts of their prosocial an...

The main aim of this paper is to forecast gold and silver daily returns with advanced regression analysis using various linear and non-linear models. ARMA models are used as a linear benchmark for comparison purposes with established non-linear models such as Nearest Neighbours and MultiLayer Perceptron (MLP), and Higher Order Neural Networks (HONN) whose application to financial markets is quite new. All models are assessed using statistical criteria such as correct directional change as well as financial criteria such as risk adjusted return. The main aim is to find which of these models generate the best returns and if nonlinear models can be used for generating excess returns in the precious metals market. This is achieved by implementing a trading simulation where the forecast is t...
