Summary
The paper presents results of GUHA analysis of proteomic data. The data are related to an oncological study on breast cancer and are given by 2D electrophoresis gels carrying expression intensity of proteins in cancer cells. The gels have been classified by a physician according to the clinical course of the tumor disease. A research task is aimed on search for significant relations between protein spot intensities and respective clinical presentation. The task was solved by the GUHA method of data mining.

Guha Analysis of Proteomic Oncological Data
1. Introduction
The breast carcinoma [1, 2] is the second most frequent oncological disease of women in the Czech Republic. According to the recent statistics [3] 5628 new cases of the disease were diagnosed in 2004 and progression is growing. In 1985 we had 59.2 cases per 100 000 women, 85.8 cases in 1995 and in 2003 there were already 110.5 cases per 100 000 women in population. Hence diagnostic and treatment of the breast cancer represent a serious health issue. One of modern directions in oncology is an effort on optimization and individualization of treatment on the basis of prognostic factors related directly to very detail (on molecular level) biochemical characteristics of concrete cancer tissue. The research presented here forms a part of the project following this direction. In the project we are interested in a specification of new prognostic factors (biomarkers) for the prediction of clinical course of the tumor disease. ...See the full content of this document
