Entrepreneurial Internationalization or International Entrepreneurship (Guest Editor's Introduction)

The rapid globalization of the environment, the liberalization of trade and investments, and the rapid advances in technology, among other trends in the latter parts of the Twentieth Century, have all accelerated the actual infusion of the two fields of Entrepreneurship and International Business (McDougall/Oviatt 2000, Oviatt/ McDougall 1994, 1995). They have also accentuated the emergence of the interdisciplinary field of International Entrepreneurship (IE). The central theme of this special issue is internationalization of entrepreneurship.

In rapidly emerging fields, such as International Entrepreneurship, there are no apparent paradigms at first. However, emerging systems build momentum and dynamism with time. Until the emergence of a consolidating, or dominant, "paradigm" to lead both the academic inquiry and pioneering practice, the field may remain issue-bound and practically-oriented for some time (Whitley 1984a). This is perhaps the present state of the field of International Entrepreneurship. This phenomenon has been observed in other emerging fields (Culnan 1987, Culnan/ O'Reilly/ Chatman 1990, Culnan/Swanson 1986) and should not, however, be too disturbing, because scholars and researchers can build upon their theoretical and conceptual groundings in International Business or Entrepreneurship, among others, to enrich the emerging field (McDouga...
