A Capsule Summary of the Book and its Review

The internationalisation of economy has undergone a dynamic development over the recent years. In consequence, there are hardly any functions of management within enterprises that are not viewed against the background of going international. This applies in particular to human resource management: The international context, in particular different cultures, plays a vital role for the motivation, performance, and cooperation of employees. It is against this background that the book "International Human Resource Management" (published in its 5th edition) should be viewed. In comparison to former editions the team of authors has changed. Peter Dowling is joined by two new authors, Marion Festing and Allen Engle, who contribute in making the fifth edition of Dowling's "International Human Resource Management" more international than former editions. The authors have made some modifications of the book's chapters. The most important changes include increasing coverage of small and medium sized enterprises, new considerations of managing cross-cultural workforces, and new material on off-shoring, particularly to India and China. In this way the book avails itself of current trends in international economics and--thoroughly as usual--tackles the consequences for the Human Resource Management (IHRM). Besides this, attention is given to the fact that the skills and personal attributes of employees are more and more valued as strategic assets in international competition. The book takes this development into account by establishing a link between IHRM and the company's strategy.

Objective and Targeted Audience

The principal objective of Dowling's, Festing's, and Engle's "International Human Resource Management" consists in giving a well-founded and comprehensive overview of the specific problems and functions of IHRM. The book certainly does justice to this claim. The individual chapters initially formulate specific teaching and learning objectives which not only facilitate the access to each chapter but also offer ways of controlling the reader's understanding after reading.
