Keupp, M. M., Beckenbauer, A., & Gassmann, O. (2010). Enforcing intellectual property rights in weak appropriability regimes: The case of de facto protection strategies in China. Management International Review, 50(1), 109-130.

Management International Review (MIR) has received a complaint claiming that significant overlap exists between the article mentioned and a 2009 article by the same authors published in R&D Management. We investigated this matter and requested a statement from the authors which we have now received. Further, we have consulted the COPE ethical standards (Wager et al., 2009) and determined the extent to which the amount and nature of the overlap between the two articles affected the contribution and uniqueness of the MIR article. On these grounds, we have decided that while both articles have emerged from the same dataset and overlap in the description of five de facto strategies, the theoretical and analytical contributions the MIR article makes is sufficiently different to constitute a distinct piece of work. The authors stated that they did not cite the previously published article because they believed in good faith that the two articles developed different aspects of the data, both concerning the audience of the article as well as the emphasis on managerial advice...
